What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, unlike a filling, is a restoration that wraps around and completely covers the tooth on all surfaces giving it it’s name, “crown” or “cap”. A lot of times dental crowns are used in cases where there is equal to, or less than 50% of healthy tooth structure remaining. Many crown restorations are fabricated using a metal lining covered with porcelain. These types of crowns are used because they are cheap and easy to place in the mouth. They are opaque or flat looking because they do not let light pass through as a natural tooth does and it makes it very difficult to diagnose any hidden decay on x-rays. There is often a dark or gray line next to the gum-line that many people confuse with dental decay when in fact, it’s just their crown. We provide exclusively all porcelain, same-day restorations. When properly placed they are as strong, if not stronger than the porcelain covered metal crowns.
Using CAD/CAM Technology, we can have a new tooth for you in less than an hour…
Like many crowns, a CEREC crown is a full coverage restoration your dentist can put over a tooth to restore the tooth to its normal size, shape, and function. CEREC is a high-tech dental device that we have in our office that allows our patients to go from diagnosis to walking out of our office with their new crown in place, all in less than an hour from start to finish! Using CAD/CAM or “Computer Aided Design” and “Computer Aided Manufacturing” technology to create your CEREC crown, we are able to provide you with a beautiful, porcelain restoration. A CEREC crown can make your tooth stronger and improve the way it looks. This cutting-edge digital mapping technology charts the inside of your mouth and takes a computer image of your tooth, so it’s very detailed and accurate. Your new tooth is milled out of a solid ceramic block in our office and bonded to your tooth after it has been polished and prepared. Very simple!
Are there any risks involved with a CEREC crown?
CEREC crowns are made to look, feel, and function just like natural tooth. Using a porcelain ceramic material, these crowns are aesthetically pleasing, non-toxic, and are extremely biocompatible, so there is virtually no risk involved in getting a CEREC crown.
